Dr. Charles P. Neimeyer, Dean of Academics, Naval War College

Dr. Neimeyer is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maryland in 1976. Shortly thereafter, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and was assigned duties with the Fleet Marine Force as an artillery officer. Dr. Neimeyer served in a variety of posts and stations during his Marine Corps Career including assignments as a Battery Commander, professor of history at the U.S. Naval Academy, professor of National Security Studies at the Naval War College, and service on the military staff of the President of the United States. During the course of his military career, Dr. Neimeyer earned a Master of Arts and Doctorate with distinction in History from Georgetown University and a Master of Arts with highest distinction from the Naval War College. While on active duty he was awarded the Joint Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal with Gold Star in lieu of a second award, and the National Defense Medal.

Retiring from the Marine Corps in 1996 as a Lieutenant Colonel, Dr. Neimeyer taught for one year on the history department faculty at the University of Central Oklahoma earning a distinction while there as Liberal Arts Teacher of the Year. Returning to the Naval War College as a civilian Professor of National Security Affairs, Dr. Neimeyer was appointed Dean of Academics in August 2000. He also holds the Naval War College Forrest Sherman Chair of Public Diplomacy.

Dr. Neimeyer has authored numerous books and articles on the U.S. military and national security affairs. He is married to the former Janet Bell of Bethesda, Maryland and they have three children, Kelli, Patrick, and Christopher.
